My adventure installing Linux on softRAID0/1 (part 2)
Posted by jamba on September 4, 2009
This is a continuation of Part 1.
After fiddling with Ubuntu and my RAID setup for a while, I got to thinking. After every upgrade I would run into this same issue, and would have to re-do the array create/build/assembly process while making sure the kernel was placed properly, as well as the initramfs.
So… combining that realization with my positive experience with Arch Linux, I decided to give up on Ubuntu and proceed forward using Arch. I have had no problems thus far with running Arch on my laptop, but on my desktop I will be much more focused on stability, rather than latest-and-greatest. Luckily for me, they just annouced a kernel26-lts not very long ago–this is a kernel that will stay supported for a longer period of time with no major changes. I will also put Gnome and Xorg on hold so they will not update automatically.
Last night, it was getting late already by the time I decided to give up on Ubuntu, including a change from setting up the /[root] partition as RAID0, and trying it as RAID1 with no success. But then I went ahead and went onward with the Arch install.
Slightly different is the way I decided to do my partitioning, again. This time, both drives are partitioned exactly symmetricaly:
- 200mb /boot partition
- 1GB swap area
- 20 GB /root
- 500-whatever-was-left GB for /home
I think I went a bit big on the root partition (20 GB is big anyway, but in RAID0 that’s 40GB! )….but oh well.
This time I’m also just doing a normal install on one drive, and then will add in the RAID after it is running. I found something in the arch wiki that may help with this method.
Last night I installed from my x86_64 Arch liveCD I had burned a while back, chose FTP as package source so that everything would be up-to-date. I once again followed the Arch Beginner’s Guide, and got everything all set up and booting. I stopped right before installing X.
That’s where I am at currently, hopefully part 3 will be the last part, and everything will all work successfully! If not…I’ll give up on setting up root as RAID, and just do /home, which would eliminate the majority of these troubles.
